Special municipality, greater of Cuba, located in the Gulf of Batabanó and to the north of the Caribbean Sea in the western region of the island of Cuba, with a 419 area of 2 km2 and one population of 77 076 inhabitants (1996). Its territory is mainly level with two sectors limited by the bog of Lanier. The first sector, the plain of the North of the Island of the Youth, in which are the mountain ranges of Houses (peak altitude 261 ms), of Horses (peak altitude 303 ms) and the second sector the plain of the South of the Island of the Youth that is of cársico origin.

Its hydrographic network has a radial configuration and among them the rivers stand out the New ones, San Pedro, Casas and Júcaro. In this island an abundant vegetation of semideciduos forests exists. In this region to the cattle ranch and the agriculture are developed, in which the culture of the citruses stands out.
