Around the foundation of this province several histories have been woven. It is spoken of the arrival from Alonso de Ojeda to the Indian town of Cueybá in 1510, that after a shipwreck marched by the coastal bog taking to an image of the virgin Maria who could rescue of the disaster. The first town that found was Cueybá, and since it had promised it gave to his cacique the image and requested that they constructed a hermitage to adore the virgin.

The territory of the Tunas was included/understood in 1513 within Bayamo, but in century XVIII it was constituted in party with more independence. The title of city in 1853 was only conferred to him.

In the War of the Ten Years, Vicente Garci'a, brave although controversial figure of our fights took to the front from his men the town from the Tunas the 22 from December from 1876.

In the War of the 95 the participation of the tuneros in the beginning of the Invasion was glorious. The cavalry of this region harassed the Spanish adversary and favored therefore the displacement of the infantry in its passage towards the province of Camagüey.

During the Neocolonial Republic the Tunas was characterized like all the Eastern region by its intransigencia. One tied closely with the clandestine movements and cooperated actively with the fight in mountains.
